1969 Triumph Bonneville - Alive Again!

Finally, after four or so years, I have it back together, my 1969 Triumph Bonneville.

It is still in need of some work, but the major stuff is all done.
I have powder coated the frame and 50 other little bits and pieces.  I installed low compression pistons.  Ya, I know most people will be saying, "What the hell!", but I am building it to be reliable and last a while.  With the low compression pistons, I can run the lowest grade fuels and still don't have to worry about detonation.  As well, the low compression pistons are a little easier on the rest of the engine.  I installed new valves, valve springs, and valve guides in the head, and new bearings, seals, and gaskets throughout the rest of the engine.  One of the biggest tasks was cleaning every little piece before it went back on.  Do you have any idea how slow and frustrating it is to clean the head and threads of a bike's worth of little nuts and bolts?... Brutal...

Still to do:
I wasn't going to paint the tank as I thought it had the original paint and was in decent condition, but after cleaning and polishing, it became apparent that it is not original, so it is now on the list of items to paint.  The side cover and oil tank have previously been badly repainted, so those will be getting done as well.  I was going to powder coat the chain guard, but it was in such bad shape, I left it out until I can source a new one to start with.  I need a new primary case cover.  The one on the engine has damage that had been welded up, but now I can't put the clutch adjusting plug in all the way, so it leaks whenever I drive it.  I'll have to get some new fork seals soon since I didn't realize how badly they leaked.  I need a new exhaust system, but the one on it is serviceable for now.  It is just rusty, leaky, and ugly. 

I am trying to decide if I should update it to an electronic ignition.  It sorta feels like cheating, but I am also looking to make it more reliable in general, so an electronic ignition would be a big step for that.  Tri-Spark has a nice looking ignition system that I have heard good things about.  The next item would be an electronic voltage regulator/rectifier.   Ah Lucas...  You make my life interesting.  I don't know if I want to change that.  =D

In case anyone noticed, the zener is mounted wrong in the picture.  I fixed it after the photo.  It should be mounted on top of the tab it bolts to, not under.

  



Netflix on XBox

Um, really??  I have Netflix on my Wii, PS3, XBMC HTPC, laptop, but Microsoft wants me to be a paid "Gold Member" of XBox Live to use Netflix on the XBox???  I don't think so.  I am not a MS hater, but come on!

Random

Is it just me, or does random never seem to be very random?
1000 songs on my USB stick or CD and the same songs seem to play over and over while I never hear the others.  What is up with that?  It is driving me nuts.  Well, maybe not nuts, but it certainly bothers me.  If I ever get to the bottom of it, I'll post it here.

OnStar - Canceling

I am trying to cancel my vehicles OnStar subscription and there is no way to do it online.  On the OnStar site, there are links and banners about upgrading your OnStar packedge, buying more calling minutes and anything else that they can bill you for, but not a word anywhere about how to cancel.  Well, that is a lie.  After a word search of the site, I found that they tell you how to cancel your subscription in the "Terms and Conditions" document.  Ok, who reads or wants to read that.  I would not have thought to look there for instructions on how to cancel and if it wasn't for Google, I would have never found it.  It's like having a wiki on how to build a computer and putting a step on how to remove the processor in with a disclaimer about electrocuting yourself.  Obviously, I know I can call to have it cut off, but I just don't like to call people, especially when I'll probably have to spend a half hour on hold.  And in order to call, I have to find the correct number out of all the different ones listed everywhere.  I am probably going to go online to look up the number on the OnStar website, so why can't I cancel it there when they have the ability (almost used "functionality" but kicked myself, that is another topic), to sign you up there.
And for anyone who got here while looking for a way to cancel, the "Terms and Conditions" state to press the blue OnStar button and tell them you want to cancel.  I have not tried yet, but I am sure it won't be as easy as they make it seem.
Just saying I'm annoyed is all...

PRTG Network Monitor

Not that anyone else around here would have known, but I have been using MRTG to monitor my routers for years.  It has served me well.  Right now, I have been switching our sites over to a Bell network that will provide us with a WAN and a single internet connection.  The setup for MRTG is... well, fun if you like programming.  During all the changes, trouble shooting, and never ending problems on Bell's side, I have been slapping up new configs and IP changes on my routers, sometimes hourly.  My new Bell links are constantly slowing down to unusable speeds and I need to know if it is because of traffic on my network or problems on their side (so far it has always been problems on their side).  Right now is when I could really use some traffic data, but my MRTG config is severely out of date.  There may be solutions to keeping MRTG up to date when changes come as frequently as they have been, but I figured I would give PRTG a try.  It seems like it would be a great tool that I can use to monitor my links during times of change.  With the Windows GUI and web GUI, it should be easy enough to configure that I can keep it up to date during rapid network changes.
If it works out well enough, perhaps I'll be budgeting for the commercial version and end my secret affair with MRTG.

Archos 101 Android Internet Tablet - Yay Christmas

For Christmas this year I received a new Gen 8 Archos 101 Internet Tablet running the Android OS.  I was interested in getting one and trying to get it set up to do everything that I do as an IT Manager so that I would not always need a full laptop with me.  My HTC Touch Pro phone running Windows Mobile 7 does almost everything, but the screen is much too small.
So far, I have my Google Apps email set up on it but not much else.  With so much family staying with me (13 in total) over the holidays and so much work to do, I have hardly had time to eat.  At the moment, I have not found an acceptable RDP client, which is a must if I am to use it for work chores, and I have not found a good telnet / ssh app, but I have not even looked for that yet.
Anyways, I will post updates on my successes, failures, and problems.
